Who Rentec Direct is and who prepares your report
Rentec Direct is property management software for landlords and property managers, headquartered at 231 SW I St in Grants Pass, Oregon. Among other features, it lets landlords order tenant screening reports on applicants. Rentec says its credit report is powered by TransUnion, that its screening includes criminal and eviction searches, and that “Rentec Direct’s database” provides its nationwide eviction search. It does not name its criminal data provider.
Rentec Direct is the ordering platform, not the company its help center names as the report provider. Its help center says: “Credit Reports are pulled by TransUnion and provided by StarPoint Screening Services from the credit bureau.” StarPoint Screening says it is a wholly owned subsidiary of The LIG Group, LLC, based in Pensacola, Florida, and its privacy policy states, “We are a consumer reporting agency.” Rentec’s blog adds that inquiries on credit reports from before April 2019 may show The LIG Group, which it calls the holding company for StarPoint.
So for a Rentec Direct screening:
- StarPoint Screening is the consumer reporting agency Rentec names as the provider of the report, and the place to start your dispute.
- TransUnion is the bureau that supplies the credit data. If a credit account is wrong, dispute it with TransUnion as well.
- Criminal and eviction results. Rentec’s screening page does not name a criminal data provider and attributes its eviction search to Rentec’s own database. The landlord’s adverse action notice must name the consumer reporting agency; if it names a company other than StarPoint, dispute with that company.
Errors that show up on tenant screening reports
- Wrong-person records. Criminal or eviction cases of someone with a similar name or birth date.
- Incomplete eviction records. A filing reported without the dismissal, settlement or judgment for the tenant.
- Bad credit data. Collections, late payments or accounts that are not yours on the TransUnion report.
- Duplicates. One court case listed more than once.
- Mixed address history. Someone else’s addresses in your history, which can pull in their records.
- Obsolete records. Arrests and other non-conviction records older than seven years.
How to dispute Rentec Direct
- Get the adverse action notice. A landlord that denies you or charges you more based on a report must give you the name, address and phone number of the consumer reporting agency.
- Request your report from StarPoint. Contact StarPoint Screening at 877-330-2444 or [email protected], the contacts Rentec’s help center gives for questions about the report. Ask for a copy of your full file and the source of each record.
- Dispute in writing. Send a dispute to StarPoint Screening, 520 East Zaragoza St., Pensacola, FL 32502, or fax it to 877-349-2175. Identify each wrong item, the case number or account, and why it is wrong.
- Attach proof. Dismissal or sealing orders, a judgment in your favor, a former landlord’s letter, your ID, and anything showing a record belongs to someone else.
- Dispute credit data with TransUnion too. If a credit account is wrong, file a dispute with TransUnion and with the creditor that reported it.
- Keep copies of everything. The denial, the notice, your report, your dispute, and proof of when you sent it.
- Track the deadline. A consumer reporting agency generally must complete its reinvestigation within 30 days of receiving your dispute (15 U.S.C. § 1681i(a)(1)).

- Accuracy (§ 1681e(b)). The consumer reporting agency must follow reasonable procedures to assure maximum possible accuracy of the information it reports.
- Reinvestigation (§ 1681i). Disputed information must be reasonably reinvestigated, free of charge, and corrected or deleted if it is inaccurate, incomplete or unverifiable.
- Adverse action notice (§ 1681m). A landlord that takes adverse action based on a report must tell you which company supplied it and that you can get a free copy and dispute it.
- Free report after denial (§ 1681j(b)). You may get a free copy if you ask within 60 days after an adverse action notice.

Can you sue Rentec Direct?
You can sue the company responsible for the error. For a Rentec Direct screening, that is usually the consumer reporting agency that prepared the report, which Rentec identifies as StarPoint Screening for credit reports, and TransUnion if the credit data itself is wrong. You may have an FCRA claim if the agency reported inaccurate information without reasonable procedures, or did not reasonably reinvestigate after you disputed. Whether Rentec Direct also bears responsibility depends on its role, such as whether it supplied the criminal or eviction data.
For a negligent violation, you may recover actual damages, such as lost housing, application fees, higher deposits or rent, moving costs, and emotional distress, plus attorney’s fees and costs (15 U.S.C. § 1681o). For a willful violation, you may recover actual damages or statutory damages of $100 to $1,000, punitive damages, and fees and costs (§ 1681n). We did not find a federal regulator order against Rentec Direct or StarPoint Screening.
An FCRA lawsuit generally must be filed within two years after you discover the violation and no more than five years after it occurred (15 U.S.C. § 1681p).

Questions about suing Rentec Direct
Can I sue Rentec Direct?
It depends on who made the error. Rentec's help center says its credit reports are pulled by TransUnion and provided by StarPoint Screening, which describes itself as a consumer reporting agency. Claims about inaccurate report contents or a mishandled dispute usually run against the consumer reporting agency named on your adverse action notice. A lawyer can review whether Rentec Direct also played a role.
Who actually prepares a Rentec Direct screening report?
Rentec Direct's help center says: Credit Reports are pulled by TransUnion and provided by StarPoint Screening Services. StarPoint Screening, a subsidiary of The LIG Group, LLC in Pensacola, Florida, says it is a consumer reporting agency. Rentec's screening page does not name its criminal data provider and says its nationwide eviction search comes from Rentec Direct's database, so check the adverse action notice for the agency's name.
What is The LIG Group on my credit report?
Rentec Direct says credit reports from before April 2019 may show The LIG Group, which it describes as the holding company for StarPoint Screening. Newer inquiries show the landlord's name or company name. Either way, the inquiry is the screening a landlord ran through Rentec.
What does it cost to bring a case?
There is no fee unless we win. FCRA Attorneys handles these cases on contingency, and the FCRA lets a successful consumer recover reasonable attorney's fees and costs from the company.
