Credit Reporting Complaints in 2026: What the CFPB Data Shows

Consumers filed 4,983,998 complaints about credit reports and other consumer reports with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from January 1 to September 30, 2026. That is up 45% from the same months of 2025, and already more than all of 2025 (4,810,291).

Data pulled November 3, 2026 from the CFPB Consumer Complaint Database. Updated quarterly.

Key findings

  • Complaints keep climbing. 4,983,998 credit reporting complaints from January 1 to September 30, 2026, up from 3,437,594 in the same period of 2025 (+45%).
  • The three bureaus draw almost all of them. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion account for 4,799,226 complaints, 96.3% of the total.
  • Most complaints say the report is wrong. "Incorrect information on your report" is the top issue, named in 2,969,813 complaints (59.6%).
  • Almost none end with money back. Companies reported closing 725 complaints with monetary relief (0.015%). 3,247,854 (65.2%) were closed with an explanation only.
  • TX leads the country with 827,283 complaints, followed by FL (722,071) and CA (447,373).
  • Background check and tenant screening complaints: 15,888 complaints were filed about "other personal consumer reports," the category that covers employment and tenant screening, check-writing and specialty reports.

The CFPB sends each complaint to the company and publishes the company's response. A complaint is the consumer's description of a problem. The CFPB does not verify every claim, and a high count is not by itself proof that a company broke the law.

Other companies with the most credit reporting complaints

After the three bureaus, these companies drew the most complaints in the credit reporting category from January 1 to September 30, 2026. Many are lenders and collectors that furnish information to the bureaus. When a consumer disputes their information through a bureau, the Fair Credit Reporting Act requires them to investigate (15 U.S.C. § 1681s-2(b)).

Methodology

  • Source: the CFPB Consumer Complaint Database, queried through its public API on November 3, 2026.
  • Scope: complaints with the product "Credit reporting or other personal consumer reports," received from January 1, 2026 to September 30, 2026, compared with January 1, 2025 to September 30, 2025. The screening table uses the sub-product "Other personal consumer report."
  • Company names are as the CFPB lists them. Some are parent companies. We link our guide where we have one.
  • Limits: the CFPB publishes complaints after the company responds or after 15 days, so recent counts can rise as complaints are added. Complaints are not a statistical sample, and the CFPB does not verify every fact. Some complaints are filed by third parties on a consumer's behalf.
  • Updates: we refresh this page after each calendar quarter.
