Wrong income data on a Blend Income Report?

Blend Insights is a consumer reporting agency powered by Blend, the lending software company. Lenders use its Blend Income Report to verify your income, employment and bank assets. If that report is wrong and Blend Insights won't fix it, the Fair Credit Reporting Act lets you dispute it and, in the right case, sue.

Who Blend Insights is and who relies on its reports

Blend Insights, Inc. is a consumer reporting agency that provides services to financial institutions and other creditors, including consumer-authorized income and employment information. It says it is powered by Blend, a technology platform for consumer lending, and that it combines data from a network of third-party data providers. The CFPB’s list of consumer reporting companies says Blend Insights provides consumer-permissioned employment, income and bank asset verification information to lenders.

If you applied for a loan through a lender that uses Blend’s software, the lender may have ordered a Blend Income Report on you. Blend Insights says that report includes data sent to it by participating data providers. Blend’s help center says one report is generated for each employer and borrower pair, covering up to the current year and two prior years of income, and that a separate Blend Employment Report is generated when a loan team reverifies employment. The lender then uses it to decide whether you qualify and how much you can borrow.

That is why an error matters. If the report shows less income than you earn, a job that ended, or less money in the bank than you have, the lender may deny the loan, lower the amount, or ask for a bigger down payment. Often you only see the result, not the data behind it.

Errors that show up on Blend Insights reports

Blend Insights pulls from several outside data providers, so mistakes can come from the source data or from how it is matched and summarized:

  • Income too low. Pay reported lower than you earn, or overtime, bonuses or a second job left out.
  • Wrong employer or status. A current job shown as ended, or the wrong employer named.
  • Wrong dates. Employment dates that make your work history look shorter than it is.
  • Assets too low. Bank balances or deposits reported wrong.
  • Mixed data. Another person’s income or account data matched to you.
  • Stale data. Old information presented as current.

How to dispute Blend Insights

  1. Find out who checked. A lender that turns you down or offers worse terms based on a report should name the company in its adverse action notice.
  2. Look in your application first. Blend Insights says that if you can log into your application, your Blend Income Report may be in the Documents tab.
  3. Request your full file. Use the Consumer Request Form on the Blend Insights page. The CFPB notes Blend Insights provides a free report if you recently applied for credit with a lender that uses Blend in its credit decisions.
  4. Mark every error. Note each wrong income figure, employer, date or balance, and what the right information is.
  5. File the dispute. Submit it through the same Consumer Request Form. Blend Insights says it will verify your identity and investigate. You can also email [email protected].
  6. Attach proof. Pay stubs, W-2s, bank statements and an offer or employment letter. Black out all but the last four digits of your Social Security number and account numbers.
  7. Dispute with the source too. Blend Insights says that if it doesn’t control the disputed information, it may ask you to dispute with the original source. Do that, but remember your dispute to Blend Insights still triggers its own duty to reinvestigate.
  8. Track the 30 days. A consumer reporting agency generally must complete its reinvestigation within 30 days of receiving your dispute (15 U.S.C. § 1681i(a)(1)).

Your rights under the FCRA

  • Accuracy (15 U.S.C. § 1681e(b)). Blend Insights must follow reasonable procedures to assure maximum possible accuracy of the information it reports.
  • Reinvestigation (§ 1681i). After a dispute, it must reasonably reinvestigate free of charge, notify the source of the data, and correct or delete information that is inaccurate, incomplete or cannot be verified.
  • File disclosure (§ 1681g). You may see all the information in your file, its sources, and who has received it.
  • Free report after a denial (§ 1681j). You are entitled to a free copy within 60 days after an adverse action notice.
  • Security freeze. Blend Insights says it will place a freeze on your file at your request.
  • Adverse action notice (§ 1681m). A lender that turns you down or offers worse terms based on a report must name the company and tell you about your right to a free copy and to dispute.

Can you sue Blend Insights?

Yes, when the facts support a claim. The FCRA lets you sue a consumer reporting agency that reports inaccurate information without reasonable procedures to assure accuracy (§ 1681e(b)), or that fails to reasonably reinvestigate after you dispute (§ 1681i). The strongest cases usually involve a dispute with clear proof, such as pay stubs, a W-2 or bank statements, that was not fixed, and a real loss tied to the bad data.

For a negligent violation, you may recover your actual damages, such as a denied loan, a higher rate or larger down payment, lost rate locks, and emotional distress, plus attorney’s fees and costs (15 U.S.C. § 1681o). For a willful violation, you may recover actual damages or statutory damages of $100 to $1,000, punitive damages, and fees and costs (§ 1681n). A lawsuit generally must be filed within two years after you discover the violation and no later than five years after it occurred (§ 1681p).
