Identity theft, mixed files & deceased errors

What should I do if Social Security has me listed as deceased?

Short answer

SSA directs people incorrectly listed as deceased to visit a local Social Security office as soon as possible with original identification. Once SSA corrects its record, separately dispute any deceased notation with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

An erroneous death entry in Social Security’s records can affect benefits, taxes, banking, and credit. It is fixed by SSA, not by the credit bureaus, and the credit reports must then be corrected separately.

Step 1: Go to a Social Security office

SSA’s guidance for people incorrectly listed as deceased is to visit a local Social Security office as soon as possible. Bring at least one current, unexpired original identity document, such as a driver’s license or passport; SSA does not accept photocopies. You can find an office through SSA’s contact page.

After correcting the record, SSA can provide a letter you can give to banks, creditors, and others to show the death report was an error. Ask for extra copies, since each organization may need one.

Step 2: Check your credit reports

Get your reports from all three bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com and look for a deceased notation on your personal information or on individual accounts.

Step 3: Dispute with each bureau

  • Send a dispute to each bureau that shows you as deceased. Include copies of your photo ID, proof of address, and the SSA letter if you have it.
  • The bureau must reinvestigate within 30 days and delete or modify information that is inaccurate or cannot be verified (15 U.S.C. § 1681i).
  • Ask any creditor that reported you as deceased to correct its reporting.

Step 4: Contact other affected organizations

Banks, benefit programs, and tax authorities may have relied on the same death information. Correcting the SSA record does not automatically fix every other system, so contact each one where you have had problems.

Keep records

Keep the SSA letter, dispute letters, certified mail receipts, and the results of each dispute. If you are still shown as deceased after providing proof, see falsely reported as deceased on credit reports.
