The Salt Lake City–Murray metro covers Salt Lake County and Tooele County to the west. It includes Salt Lake City, Murray and the other cities that fill the Salt Lake Valley, along with Tooele and the smaller communities across the Oquirrh Mountains. Whether you rent or own, your credit report shapes what you pay for housing, car loans and credit.
Credit report errors can come from many places. A creditor may report a late payment that was on time. A collector may report a debt you already paid or settled. A mixed file can place another person's accounts on your report, and identity theft can add accounts you never opened. You can dispute errors with Equifax, Experian or TransUnion. The bureau must investigate and send the dispute to the company that reported the item, which must also investigate.
If a bureau or a furnisher fails to correct a real error after a dispute, the Fair Credit Reporting Act lets you sue for damages. Utah is a single federal district. Cases from Salt Lake and Tooele counties fall in its Central Division and can be heard at the Orrin G. Hatch United States Courthouse on West Temple in downtown Salt Lake City. The FCRA also allows filing in state court. A case generally must be filed within two years of discovering the violation and no more than five years after it happened.

Frequently asked questions
Where is an FCRA case from Salt Lake County filed in federal court?
Utah has one federal district court. Salt Lake and Tooele counties are in its Central Division, and the court sits at the Orrin G. Hatch United States Courthouse in Salt Lake City. An FCRA case may also be filed in Utah state court.
A collector is reporting a debt I already paid. What can I do?
Gather proof of payment, such as a receipt, bank statement or settlement letter. Dispute the account with each bureau that reports it and include copies of your proof. If the bureau or the collector keeps reporting the debt as unpaid after investigating, you may have a claim under the FCRA.
Another person's accounts are showing on my credit report. Is that common?
It can happen when a bureau mixes files for people with similar names, birthdates or Social Security numbers. A mixed file can lead to denials for apartments and loans. You can dispute each account that is not yours, and a bureau that fails to fix a mixed file may be liable under the FCRA.
How long do I have to file an FCRA lawsuit in Salt Lake City?
FCRA deadlines are the same everywhere: generally two years from when you discover the violation, and no more than five years from when it happened (15 U.S.C. § 1681p). Waiting can cost you the claim.
