The Census Bureau's Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin metro area had about 2.20 million residents in its July 2025 estimate, the 34th largest in the country. It spans fourteen Middle Tennessee counties, from Davidson County and the Metro Nashville government to Rutherford, Williamson, Sumner and Wilson counties and more rural counties farther out. Its principal cities are Nashville, Murfreesboro, Franklin and Smyrna. Renters and buyers across the region depend on accurate credit reports for leases, mortgages and car loans.
Credit report errors can cost you an apartment, raise your interest rate or block a loan. Common problems include accounts that belong to someone with a similar name, debts that were paid or settled but still show a balance, a collection listed twice after it was sold, and medical bills reported after insurance paid them. You can dispute errors with Equifax, Experian or TransUnion. The bureau generally has 30 days to reinvestigate, and the furnisher must investigate once the bureau forwards your dispute.
If a real error is not fixed, the Fair Credit Reporting Act lets you sue. The whole metro is in the Middle District of Tennessee. Most counties, including Davidson, Rutherford and Williamson, are in the Nashville Division, which sits downtown. Maury and Hickman counties are in the Columbia Division, and Macon and Smith counties are in the Northeastern Division at Cookeville. Suits generally must be filed within two years after you discover the violation and no more than five years after it happened.

Local and state rules in Nashville
- Metro Nashville ban-the-box policy for Metro jobs (Metropolitan Civil Service Commission policy adopted Nov. 10, 2015 (in effect by Jan. 1, 2016))
Removed criminal history questions from applications for Metropolitan Government jobs, with exceptions for police, fire and certain other positions. The selected candidate must still pass a background check before hire. A 2016 Tennessee law bars local governments from requiring private employers or contractors to drop criminal history questions, so this policy covers Metro jobs only. Read it

Frequently asked questions
Where is an FCRA case from Rutherford or Williamson County filed?
Both counties are in the Nashville Division of the Middle District of Tennessee. Cases are heard at the federal courthouse in Nashville. The FCRA also allows filing in a Tennessee state court.
A medical bill my insurance paid is showing as a collection. Can I dispute it?
Yes. You can dispute the collection with each bureau and send the explanation of benefits or proof of payment. The bureau must reinvestigate, and the collector must review the dispute. If the error stays, you may have a claim under the FCRA.
What can I recover if a credit reporting error hurt me?
The FCRA allows actual damages for negligent violations, which can include denied credit, higher interest and emotional distress. Willful violations can also support statutory and punitive damages. The law also allows recovery of attorney's fees and costs when a claim succeeds.
How long do I have to file an FCRA lawsuit in Nashville?
FCRA deadlines are the same everywhere: generally two years from when you discover the violation, and no more than five years from when it happened (15 U.S.C. § 1681p). Waiting can cost you the claim.
