The Census Bureau's Columbus metro area had about 2.24 million residents in its July 2025 estimate, the 32nd largest in the country. It includes ten central Ohio counties, led by Franklin County and including Delaware, Licking, Fairfield and Union counties. For renters and homeowners alike, a credit report decides apartment approvals, mortgage rates and car loans.
Credit report errors are common and costly. A paid account may still show a balance. A student loan may be reported as late after it was consolidated or discharged. Someone with a similar name may have accounts on your file, or a collection may be listed twice after the debt was sold. You can dispute errors with Equifax, Experian or TransUnion. The bureau generally has 30 days to reinvestigate, and the lender, servicer or collector must investigate once the bureau forwards your dispute.
If a real error is not fixed, the Fair Credit Reporting Act lets you sue the bureau, the furnisher, or both. Every county in the metro is in the Eastern Division of the Southern District of Ohio, and cases from the area are heard at the federal courthouse in downtown Columbus. The FCRA also allows filing in state court. Suits generally must be filed within two years after you discover the violation and no more than five years after it happened.

Frequently asked questions
Where is an FCRA case from Franklin or Delaware County filed?
All ten counties in the Columbus metro are in the Eastern Division of the Southern District of Ohio. Cases are heard in Columbus. The FCRA also allows filing in an Ohio court of common pleas.
My student loan servicer reported me late after my loans were consolidated. Is that an error?
It can be. After consolidation, the old loans should generally show as paid or transferred, not delinquent. You can dispute the late marks with the bureaus. A servicer that keeps reporting them after a proper dispute may be liable under the FCRA.
Do I need to dispute with the credit bureau before I can sue?
For most claims against a lender or collector, the FCRA requires that you first dispute with a credit bureau, which then notifies the furnisher. Disputing in writing and keeping copies creates a record. Some claims against the bureaus themselves do not require a prior dispute, but disputing is usually the first step.
How long do I have to file an FCRA lawsuit in Columbus?
FCRA deadlines are the same everywhere: generally two years from when you discover the violation, and no more than five years from when it happened (15 U.S.C. § 1681p). Waiting can cost you the claim.
