Georgia does not have a full state credit reporting act, but its Fair Business Practices Act includes credit reporting provisions. Under O.C.G.A. § 10-1-393(b)(29)(C), each nationwide credit bureau must give a consumer who verifies their identity two complete credit reports per calendar year, free on request. The same paragraph makes it a misdemeanor to obtain someone's credit information under false pretenses, or for a bureau employee to knowingly give file information to an unauthorized person.
Georgia's security freeze law, O.C.G.A. § 10-1-913 et seq., lets consumers block new creditors from seeing their reports, and § 10-1-914.1 covers freezes for protected consumers such as young children. Federal law now makes freezes free at the nationwide bureaus. Georgia has no state law barring medical debt from credit reports. For errors, the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) is the main tool. Credit bureaus must reinvestigate disputes, usually within 30 days. The lenders, collectors and servicers that report data must investigate disputes the bureaus send them and correct or delete what they cannot verify. A consumer harmed by a willful violation can seek statutory or actual damages, punitive damages and attorney fees.
Georgia has three federal judicial districts. An FCRA lawsuit can be filed in the Northern District (Atlanta, Gainesville, Newnan and Rome), the Middle District (including Macon, Albany, Athens, Columbus, Thomasville and Valdosta) or the Southern District (Savannah, Augusta, Brunswick, Dublin, Statesboro and Waycross), depending on where the consumer lives and where the events happened. The FCRA also allows suit in state court.

Frequently asked questions
How many free credit reports can Georgians get?
Georgia law requires each nationwide credit bureau to provide two free complete reports per calendar year on request, after you verify your identity. Federal law separately provides free reports through the official annual credit report site. Checking regularly can help you catch errors early.
Can I freeze my child's credit in Georgia?
Yes. Georgia law provides for freezes on the files of protected consumers, and federal law requires the nationwide bureaus to create and freeze a file for a child under 16 at no charge when a parent or guardian asks.
Where would a Georgia credit report lawsuit be filed?
An FCRA case is usually filed in the federal district that covers where you live: the Northern, Middle or Southern District of Georgia. The FCRA also allows filing in state court. A claim generally must be filed within two years of discovering the violation and within five years of when it happened.
How long do I have to file an FCRA lawsuit in Georgia?
FCRA deadlines are the same everywhere: generally two years from when you discover the violation, and no more than five years from when it happened (15 U.S.C. § 1681p). Waiting can cost you the claim.
