Jefferson County is the center of the Birmingham metro, with 665,742 residents in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimates. Shelby County lies to the south. St. Clair, Walker, Blount, Chilton and Bibb counties add smaller cities and rural areas. Whether people are buying a home in Hoover, renting in Birmingham or financing a truck in Walker County, lenders and landlords check credit first.
Credit report errors can raise the interest rate on a loan or lead to a denial. They can also cost a renter an apartment. Typical problems include medical or collection debts reported in the wrong amount, accounts from a mixed file with a relative or someone with a similar name, and paid accounts still shown as past due. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you can dispute these errors with the credit bureau. The bureau must reinvestigate, and the creditor must investigate when the bureau sends it the dispute.
Most FCRA cases from the metro belong in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. Jefferson, Shelby and Blount counties are in its Southern Division in Birmingham. Since a 2024 law reorganized the district, St. Clair County is in the Eastern Division at Anniston. Walker and Bibb counties are in the Western Division at Tuscaloosa. Chilton County is in the Middle District of Alabama, which sits in Montgomery.

Local and state rules in Birmingham
- City of Birmingham ban-the-box executive order (Mayor William A. Bell, Sr., Executive Order "Ban the Box" (Feb. 4, 2016; effective upon signing))
A mayoral executive order directed the city's Human Resources Department to remove criminal history questions from the initial stage of city job applications, stop treating a record as an automatic bar and give applicants a chance to contest an inaccurate or irrelevant record. Sensitive government positions where a record is disqualifying are excluded. It covers City of Birmingham jobs only, not private employers, and as an executive order it is not a codified ordinance. Frequently asked questions
Where is an FCRA case from Hoover or Birmingham filed in federal court?
Jefferson and Shelby counties are in the Southern Division of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. That division sits at the Hugo L. Black U.S. Courthouse in Birmingham. FCRA claims may also be filed in Alabama state court.
I live in Walker County. Do I still go to court in Jasper?
No. A 2024 federal law reorganized the Northern District of Alabama and ended its Jasper Division. Walker County is now in the Western Division, where court is held in Tuscaloosa. The court's website notes that the Tuscaloosa courthouse has no clerk's office to accept filings.
A medical collection account on my report is wrong. What can I do?
You can dispute it with each credit bureau that reports it and include proof, such as insurance statements or a paid receipt. The bureau must reinvestigate and pass the dispute to the collector, which must investigate and correct inaccurate information. If the error stays after a dispute, you may have a claim under the FCRA.
How long do I have to file an FCRA lawsuit in Birmingham?
FCRA deadlines are the same everywhere: generally two years from when you discover the violation, and no more than five years from when it happened (15 U.S.C. § 1681p). Waiting can cost you the claim.
